Look at these hardworking, engaged 2nd graders during reading time today!
At Hoople Elementary for grades K-2, we use Reading Mastery as our core reading curriculum. This program has a long history of success in helping students develop strong foundational reading skills and confidence as readers.
What is Reading Mastery?
Reading Mastery is a research-based, systematic approach to teaching reading. It is designed to guide students step-by-step through the essential components of literacy, including:
Phonics and Decoding: Teaching students how to sound out words and recognize patterns.
Fluency: Helping students read with accuracy, speed, and expression.
Comprehension: Encouraging students to understand and think critically about what they read.
Why Reading Mastery Works
The program uses direct instruction, which means lessons are carefully sequenced and structured to ensure students build skills gradually and successfully. This approach minimizes frustration while maximizing learning by presenting concepts clearly and providing plenty of practice and feedback.
How It Supports All Learners
Reading Mastery includes differentiated instruction, allowing teachers to meet the needs of students at various skill levels. Whether students are just beginning their reading journey or need extra support, the curriculum provides tools to ensure every learner makes progress.
Ask your child what they learned about in Reading Mastery each day!

GO, TITANS!

Check out our Kindergarten friends learning their new heart word "they" this week!
In early elementary, building a strong foundation in reading is one of the most important steps in your child’s education. One approach gaining attention is the use of Heart Words—words that students are encouraged to “know by heart.” These are often high-frequency words or irregular words that don’t always follow standard phonetic patterns (like "said" or "was").
What Does the Research Say?
Research shows that incorporating Heart Words into early literacy instruction helps students recognize and read words quickly, boosting their reading fluency and comprehension. Heart Words are often taught alongside phonics, giving students tools to decode regular words while memorizing tricky words they encounter frequently.
How Does This Help Your Child?
Encourages faster word recognition and stronger fluency.
Reduces frustration when reading common but irregular words.
Builds confidence as they tackle more challenging texts.
At school, we use strategies such as multisensory learning—highlighting the "tricky" parts of Heart Words and practicing them in context. You can support this at home by practicing flashcards, reading familiar books, or playing word games together.

The high school was in a soft lockdown from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM today because of a medical emergency. The lock down was initiated for privacy of the individual and to allow the medical response team to act quickly. The issue has been resolved and instruction has resumed as normal.

All after school student activities for today, December 4, are CANCELLED.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are CANCELLING SCHOOL today, December 4. All students will be dropped off back home again.
